Here is a little history for you, the Maschinenpistole 44 (MP44) was the first modern assault rifle to see major deployment, also the Sturmgewehr 44 (storm rifle 44 or assault rifle 44) both same weapons with minor differences only visible with close inspection.

The MP44 went into service in September of 1943 but its design dates to 1942, it was manufactured by C. G. Haenel Waffen und Fahrradfabrik (CITEFA), and 425,977 were made.
